China, UK Strengthen Economic Ties Through Enhanced Services Trade Discussions

Date:

In a significant move to boost economic collaboration, China and the United Kingdom have agreed to fast-track a joint feasibility study concerning a bilateral services trade agreement. This initiative aims to enhance cooperation in high-value service sectors and is anticipated to fortify economic connections amidst the prevailing global trade uncertainties.

At the recent China-UK Joint Economic and Trade Commission meeting held in London, Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao encouraged increased British investment and urged the UK to provide a fair and unbiased environment for Chinese companies. Both nations reiterated their allegiance to upholding the rules-based global trading framework through the World Trade Organization.

UK Business and Trade Secretary Peter Kyle underscored the importance of expanding cooperation in services as a cornerstone of bilateral relations. He pointed out the rapid growth of China’s services sector as a lucrative opportunity for British businesses and expressed the UK’s eagerness to enhance collaboration through the bilateral services partnership and the trade agreement study.

Amid these discussions, China also voiced concerns over the UK’s recent steel import restrictions, urging a revision to ensure alignment with international trade regulations. Despite such challenges, merchandise trade between the two countries has shown robust growth, with bilateral goods trade witnessing a 6.5% increase year-on-year during the first five months of 2026.

Experts suggest that the services trade agreement under consideration could open new avenues in diverse sectors like finance, banking, education, professional services, skills training, and creative industries. This agreement is expected to unlock fresh opportunities, further solidifying the economic partnership between China and the UK.
