France’s President Emmanuel Macron is set to embark on a state visit to Spain from September 29 to 30, as announced by the Spanish government. During his two-day visit, Macron will engage in discussions with Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and participate in a state banquet hosted by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. This marks Macron’s initial official visit to Spain since January 2023 and represents the first state visit by a French president to Spain since 2009.
The meeting between Macron and Sanchez is anticipated to focus on fortifying the cooperative ties between the two nations and tackling key issues confronting Europe. Among the topics on the agenda are the safeguarding of democratic processes, the influence of social media, and the implications of artificial intelligence. These discussions underscore the leaders’ commitment to addressing pressing challenges within the European context.
In addition to bilateral matters, the two leaders will delve into significant international concerns. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the evolving situation in the Middle East are expected to be at the forefront of their talks. These discussions aim to align their positions and explore collaborative approaches to these complex global issues.
Earlier in January 2023, Macron and Sanchez signed a friendship treaty during the French president’s visit to Spain. However, the treaty has yet to be ratified by the Spanish government, facing resistance from right-wing political factions within the country. This pending ratification remains a point of interest as the two leaders reconvene for further dialogue.
