Sonay Kartal, a British tennis player, has achieved a significant milestone by reaching the final of the Wuhan Open, marking the most prominent final of her career. Kartal triumphed over Jelena Ostapenko with a 7-6 (9), 7-6 (5) victory on Saturday. This win is particularly remarkable as she managed to save six set points and recover from trailing positions in both sets.
Kartal’s journey to the Wuhan Open final is notable not only for the victory itself but also for her comeback from a six-month hiatus due to a back injury. Demonstrating impressive form upon her return to top-level competition, Kartal has secured victories against well-known players such as Belinda Bencic, Jasmine Paolini, and Elina Svitolina. Starting the tournament ranked No. 170 in the world, her performance has made her the lowest-ranked player to reach a WTA 1000 final since the format’s inception in 2009.
This impressive run also ensures that Kartal will ascend into the world’s top 50 in the next rankings update, surpassing Katie Boulter to become the new No. 1 for British women’s singles players. Reflecting on her match against Ostapenko, Kartal described it as one of the toughest of her career, crediting her mental resilience for the victory.
Kartal previously gained attention by reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2025, although her progress was hindered by injury. Her recent performances in China signal a return to form, potentially establishing her among the leading competitors on the women’s tour.
In the other semi-final of the Wuhan Open, Poland’s Maja Chwalińska defeated fellow Pole Iga Świątek with a score of 7-5, 6-1. Świątek faced challenges due to a left-thigh injury, requiring a medical timeout and continuing the match with her leg bandaged.
