India-EU Set Year-End Goal for Free Trade Deal, Enhancing Economic Ties

Date:

In a significant move towards establishing one of the largest trade partnerships globally, India and the European Union have pledged to expedite the finalization of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the year’s end. This announcement was made following a trilateral meeting involving Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, European Council President António Costa, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, held on the margins of the G7 Summit in Evian, France. The leaders emphasized that the agreement would be a comprehensive deal encompassing goods, services, digital trade, investment, and technology cooperation.

The envisioned FTA aims to create an expansive free trade area that would connect approximately two billion people and represent about a quarter of the world’s economic output. Additionally, India and the EU are looking to broaden their collaboration in defense, connectivity, and strategic infrastructure projects, notably including the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor. EU leaders have noted significant progress in negotiations since their earlier conclusion this year, with both parties now concentrating on finalizing the legal and technical details necessary for the formal signing of the agreement.

This proposed trade deal is being touted as a landmark framework to enhance economic integration between India and Europe, especially in light of evolving global supply chains. During discussions, Prime Minister Modi underscored the vital role of strong India–EU relations in fostering stability and inclusive growth. Concurrently, European leaders highlighted the strategic importance of this partnership in tackling global economic and geopolitical issues.

The trilateral meeting also provided an opportunity for a broader review of cooperation in trade and investment, as well as discussions on regional and global matters of mutual interest. Officials from both sides expressed optimism about the momentum of current efforts, with expectations of continued high-level engagement in the lead-up to the anticipated signing. This ongoing dialogue underscores a shared commitment to deepening ties and addressing challenges on a global scale.
