India-UK Trade Agreement Finalized by Starmer Amid Resignation Announcement

Date:

Keir Starmer, the outgoing British Prime Minister, has marked a significant diplomatic achievement with the conclusion of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) shortly before announcing his resignation. This landmark deal was finalized during discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G7 Summit 2026, where both leaders agreed to July 15 as the start date for the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). The agreement is anticipated to boost the already substantial trade relationship between the two countries, currently valued at approximately £48 billion annually.

Throughout his tenure, Starmer prioritized strengthening ties with India, making the trade agreement a central goal of his administration. He emphasized the potential for economic growth through this deal, citing India’s burgeoning global economic presence and the mutual advantages of facilitating more accessible trade. Since assuming leadership of the Labour Party following their 2019 electoral defeat, Starmer has been dedicated to mending relations with the British Indian community and fostering a deeper collaboration with India on various fronts, including trade, security, education, technology, and climate change initiatives.

Starmer’s career before politics was rooted in law, where he gained recognition as a distinguished legal professional and served as the Director of Public Prosecutions. His political journey led him to the Prime Minister’s office after Labour’s resounding victory in the 2024 general election. Despite initial success in stabilizing the UK economy and implementing domestic reforms, Starmer’s leadership faced challenges over time, encountering policy obstacles and political setbacks that eventually undermined his standing.

In his resignation speech, Starmer expressed deep emotion and acknowledged that he had lost the confidence of his parliamentary party members as the leader best suited to guide Labour into the forthcoming general election. He accepted their decision with humility and gratitude, closing a notable chapter in British political history.
