Istanbul Airport has overtaken Heathrow as Europe’s busiest airport for the month of July. While Heathrow saw 7.86 million passengers, Istanbul Airport welcomed 8.15 million during the same period. This shift marks a significant development as Heathrow’s numbers fell by 1.5% compared to July of the previous year, whereas Istanbul experienced a 2.3% increase in passenger traffic.
The dip in Heathrow’s passenger numbers has been partly linked to disruptions stemming from the conflict in the Middle East. Such challenges have intensified calls for the UK government to greenlight Heathrow’s much-debated third runway project. Currently operating at nearly full capacity with its two runways, Heathrow aims to boost its annual capacity to approximately 150 million passengers through a proposed £33 billion expansion.
Heathrow’s management argues that expanding the airport is crucial for enhancing the UK’s global connectivity, trade, and tourism. The recent figures have underscored the necessity for this additional capacity, according to Heathrow officials. The ongoing discussion around the expansion reflects the strategic importance of maintaining Heathrow’s competitive edge in the face of growing international competition.
Istanbul Airport, which commenced operations in 2018, boasts a larger site and is operational 24/7. It currently has three runways, with plans to add a fourth by the end of 2026. The airport’s modern infrastructure and ongoing expansion efforts have positioned it as a formidable contender on the European aviation landscape.
Meanwhile, other UK airports are experiencing growth, with London Stansted and Manchester airports reporting their busiest-ever July. These airports handled 3.1 million and 3.4 million passengers, respectively, highlighting a robust demand for air travel within the region. As these airports continue to accommodate growing numbers, the wider UK aviation sector remains a key player in global travel dynamics.
