Tech Stocks Plunge Amid AI Investment Worries, Erasing $1 Trillion in Value

Date:

US technology stocks experienced a significant downturn this week, driven by investor concerns over the profitability of artificial intelligence investments. This resulted in a nearly $1 trillion decrease in market value on the Nasdaq within a week, with losses over the past month reaching close to $2 trillion. The market sell-off was exacerbated by disappointing earnings reports from major tech companies.

The Nasdaq Composite saw a drop of over 3%, while the S&P 500 fell more than 1%, threatening to negate its gains for October. The Dow Jones Industrial Average also declined, albeit less drastically. Investors are becoming increasingly skeptical about whether tech giants can achieve adequate returns on their substantial AI infrastructure investments.

Intel’s stock took a significant hit, plummeting nearly 30% after the company released a weaker-than-expected profit forecast for the final quarter, despite exceeding analyst expectations for the recent quarter. Similarly, Amazon’s shares dipped 1.8% following reports of lower-than-anticipated summer profits and increased spending. Alphabet faced a substantial setback, with shares dropping over 12% and resulting in a $500 billion loss in market value, largely due to rising cash outlays on AI initiatives.

Major tech corporations, including Meta, Alphabet, and Amazon, continue to ramp up their investment forecasts to enhance AI infrastructure and data center capacity. However, the growing apprehension among investors centers on whether these hefty investments will yield profitable returns and productivity enhancements.

Nvidia’s shares fell by 3.1%, contributing additional pressure on the S&P 500. This decline reflects broader worries about how high interest rates could potentially hinder data center expansion and dampen demand for companies that have benefited from the AI surge.

The current market volatility underscores the increasing uncertainty surrounding the financial viability of AI investments, despite overall positive expectations for corporate earnings growth in the US economy.
