Thailand and France Enhance Economic Ties with Strategic Partnership Agreement

In a significant diplomatic development, Anutin Charnvirakul and Emmanuel Macron have consented to enhance the relationship between Thailand and France by establishing a strategic partnership. This agreement emerged from their official discussions held in Paris at the Élysée Palace. The talks primarily centered on expanding mutual cooperation across various sectors including trade, investment, cybersecurity, defense, and advanced technology. In addition, both leaders took the opportunity to assess regional issues involving Cambodia and Myanmar.

The dialogue between the two countries resulted in a commitment to bolster collaboration in key industries such as alternative energy, aerospace, aviation, smart power grids, and artificial intelligence infrastructure. France reiterated its support for finalizing the Thailand-European Union free trade agreement negotiations by the end of the year. These negotiations were initially launched in 2013, paused in 2014, and resumed in 2023. According to Thai officials, the agreement holds the potential for substantial economic benefits for both nations.

Furthermore, the two nations agreed to enhance their defense and cybersecurity partnership, focusing on combating cybercrime, online scams, and transnational digital threats. On the topic of regional matters, Thailand reaffirmed its dedication to resolving border disputes with Cambodia through peaceful dialogue and adherence to international law.

In the framework of their strengthened partnership, both governments announced the implementation of the Joint Action Plan to strengthen the Thai-French Partnership from 2026 to 2028. This initiative is designed to lay the groundwork for a formal strategic partnership. During his visit to France, Anutin also engaged with executives from prominent French companies, including Airbus, Imerys, EssilorLuxottica, IN Groupe, and Thales Group, to encourage further investment in Thailand’s burgeoning high-tech and future industries.

French corporate leaders expressed optimism about the investment climate in Thailand, with Airbus specifically confirming plans to expand its aviation and engineering operations in the country. This statement of confidence underscores the potential for increased economic collaboration and mutual benefits stemming from the strengthened ties between Thailand and France.
