IndiGo Halts Mumbai-Manchester Route Due to Increased Costs, Airspace Issues

Date:

IndiGo, recognized as India’s largest airline, has decided to temporarily halt its Mumbai-Manchester route starting on August 31, 2026. This move comes in response to ongoing airspace restrictions, which have led to longer flight durations and heightened operational expenses. The decision is influenced by broader challenges facing the international aviation sector, including geopolitical tensions, elevated fuel prices, and disruptions to established routes, culminating in a substantial increase in the costs associated with long-haul flights.

The suspension will see IndiGo return one of the six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft it had leased from Norse Atlantic Airways. These aircraft were initially acquired in early 2025 to facilitate the airline’s expansion into European markets, a strategic move ahead of receiving its own Airbus A350 fleet. Despite the suspension, IndiGo maintains that its other long-haul international services remain unaffected and will continue to operate according to schedule.

IndiGo’s foray into Europe has been met with robust customer demand, marking a significant step in establishing its presence in key international markets. However, challenges such as extended flight durations due to airspace constraints, rising aviation turbine fuel costs, and currency exchange rate volatility have rendered the Manchester route economically unsustainable. Abhijit Dasgupta, Senior Vice President of Network Planning and Revenue Management, described the suspension as an unfortunate necessity given the current operational environment. He emphasized the positive customer reception and expressed the airline’s commitment to resuming the service when conditions permit.

In light of the suspension, IndiGo is actively seeking alternative avenues to continue its collaboration with Norse Atlantic Airways, as part of its broader strategy for international growth. The airline is dedicated to maintaining its long-term expansion plans while adapting to the evolving realities of global aviation.

Passengers affected by the suspension will receive advance notifications and assistance from the airline. This includes offering alternative travel arrangements or refunds, where applicable, to ensure minimal disruption to their plans.
