Meta Implements Teen Safety Reforms, Impacting Facebook and Instagram Operations

Date:

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has reached a significant settlement with California and 28 other U.S. states, addressing concerns over its platforms’ role in fostering addictive behaviors among teenagers. The agreement follows allegations that the company’s social media features have negatively impacted young users, prompting Meta to implement notable changes aimed at safeguarding teenagers.

Under the terms of the settlement, Meta is set to introduce several protective measures designed to limit the time adolescents spend on its platforms. These measures include implementing daily usage caps, managing notifications during school hours, and restricting overnight access to the apps. Additionally, Meta plans to limit the availability of certain filters that promote plastic surgery, which are particularly targeted at young users.

Financially, the settlement could see Meta paying up to $18 billion, contingent on court approval, with the funds distributed among the states involved over a decade. California stands to gain between $1.5 billion and $2.1 billion, while Colorado could receive approximately $615 million. This financial commitment underscores the scale of the issue and the significant impact anticipated from the new measures.

The states involved in the settlement accused Meta of intentionally designing its platforms to maximize user engagement, thereby encouraging excessive use among teenagers. They also raised concerns about the company’s data collection practices, specifically highlighting the collection of information from children under 13 without obtaining adequate parental consent.

Despite agreeing to the settlement, Meta has denied any wrongdoing. The company emphasized the need for other major social media platforms, such as TikTok, Snap, and YouTube, to adopt similar safeguards to effectively address the broader issue of social media’s impact on young users. This agreement emerges amidst a backdrop of numerous lawsuits that Meta and other social media giants face from various stakeholders, including families, schools, and government representatives, over the alleged negative effects of social media on children and teenagers.
