China’s U17 women’s soccer team has made history by advancing to the quarterfinals of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup for the first time. The breakthrough came after a tense victory over France, decided by a 4-3 penalty shootout following a goalless draw in their last-16 match held in Rabat.
The standout performer for China was goalkeeper Niu Ziqi, who played a pivotal role in the win by saving two crucial penalties. Her heroics started with a save against Lea Motyka and ended with another against Lisa Mabilon, ensuring China’s progression into the next round.
Throughout the match, both teams faced challenges in finding the back of the net. France dominated the first half, creating numerous chances but failing to capitalize on them. On the other hand, China improved their play in the second half after coach Ma Xiaoxu implemented tactical changes, yet neither team could break the deadlock during regular time. The match then moved to penalties, where Liu Yuxi and Liu Yuke successfully converted their attempts for China, followed by successful strikes from Yang Lan and Cheng Wandi.
China entered the knockout stage in strong form, having topped Group E with a flawless record. They secured their place at the summit of the group by defeating Kenya 3-0, Samoa 7-0, and the United States 3-2 in the group matches.
Looking ahead, China is set to face Brazil in the quarterfinals on November 1. Brazil earned their spot in the last eight by overcoming Poland in another penalty shootout, with an 8-7 score following a 3-3 draw in regular time.
